Devine Justice: Chapter Eight "Danil Elstin"
Danil’s father built the assassination bureau in Buffalo while Danil was in his last year of the army. When it was built the family was living off the money they earned from the bureau back in St. Petersburg, they didn’t get any money for a few months, when they finally did get work business started getting better and better.
Danil met his wife when he came out of the army and they were going out for another five years before they got a house together and met Katie, another year later they got married. They had a huge wedding and an amazing honeymoon.
Vladimir Elstin, Danil’s father, raised the two brothers on his own when Danil was five, Vladimir’s wife died from cancer at the age of thirty-seven. Elstin women have never lived a long life, the youngest died at the age of seventeen and the oldest dieing at fifty-four, Danil’s wife is now thirty-five and is still standing strong.
The business itself is actually a lounge bar, if a customer wanted someone killed, they would simply go up to one of the Elstins and hand them a note with either a number to contact them or information on where to talk, one of the Elstins would then go and talk to the customer then do some research on the victim. The assassin can refuse to go through with an assassination if he wished. On average they would get one assassination per month, every couple months they would get a lucky streak and get an assassination a week.
The bureau was a beautiful place, very calming place. Black marble floors with red carpeting held down with gold dividing strips, there were black marble walls dividing the entrance hall from the lounge zones, the walls were 3 foot tall with the same design on the floors except instead of carpet it was a thin coat of red paint. There were gold pillars holding the roof up. Both lounge zones were symmetrical. In the lounge were a lot of booths with red velvet upholstery wrapped around in a semi circle with a black faux-marble table that is just over knee height. At the end of each lounge, there was a Bar. The bar was dim the wall at the back was covered in bottles whiskies, beers and spirits. Underneath the shelves of the bar were fridges tidily stacked with beers and alcho-pops and another filled with soft-drinks and bottled water. Hanging off of the fridges were peanut displays. The bartenders were Vladimir, Danil’s brother, Anne (an old Irish woman) and on some days Danil himself.
Danil only worked in the bar when he liked, he had fun at the bar, but if he had a hit he wouldn’t work for a couple of days but he’d be back working strong.
When Danil was assigned a hit he would do the same thing. On the day he’s notified he would go to the local gun shop to buy clips for his guns. The next day he would devise his plan to kill him, that includes going to where he lives, or wherever the location was that was specified, steak out the place and find anywhere that would be good enough to take aim at the victim. The day after that he would return to the customer and accept or reject the hit. The next day he would take his SV-98 out of storage, a ‘secret compartment’ in other words a false bottom of a big toolbox in his garage. The last day he would pack clothes or anything he would need and the SV-98. He would return to the bureau sort out some papers and switch cars, then he would leave for the assassination.
When Danil arrived at the victims house he would go to the place where he thought was the best place to kill them. He would set up in his equipment. There would be some days he would be so devoted to his kill that he would stay where he was for hours on end, not even stopping for a bathroom break. In some cases there would be no toilet around it annoyed him but he was good at what he did so he wouldn’t leave his post.
The Day he confessed to his wife, he sat her down and told her the truth,
“My Dear, I have not been completely honest with you, I must tell you what my real job is. I cannot tell anyone normally but when we Elstins are about to get married we do tell our fiancé’s.” Danil confessed.
“What do you mean Honey, tell me what you are trying to say!” Danils fiancée yelled.
“I am not just a assistant manager at my fathers bar, when I am away I am being paid to kill people…” Danil admitted while his wife stared with an open mouth.
“I am an assassin…” His fiancée mouth stayed open.
“You KILL people?!?!?” she yelled
“shhhhh… I could have people watching me right now!” he said in a quiet yet yelling tone.
“But you kill people…” she said
“Please, stay calm.”
“You Kill people!”
“Yes we are past that now, please, I just want to know are we still going to get married?” he said, fearing she’d say no
“…has there ever been much risk? Have you ever gone to jail? Who have you killed?” she said in a panic
“No one big… Just people who have been hated!”
“Hated?”
“Yes! People come to us and we find out if Nobody likes them, if they are loved, by say a family, Wife etc. we don’t allow the killing. We do a lot of research before and after the killing.”
“That doesn’t take away from the fact you MURDER PEOPLE!”
“shhh! I told you! Be quiet!”
“We will talk later!” she said as she picked up her gym bag and left.
Danil walked through the door of the gym and walked by the desk
“excuse me sir! You can’t go through there, unless you’re a member!” The woman behind the counter said.
“I just need to see someone” Danil said stopping at the door.
“I’m sorry sir I can’t let you through there”
“What if I ask again?” he said slipping her a twenty dollar note.
“Five minutes!”
“thank you.”
He walked through the doors and approached a woman on a treadmill,
“Excuse me have you seen a woman about this size,” he said holding his hand just above shoulder.
“Black hair, this length,” he continued now holding his hand by his neck.
“Umm, in her early thirties.” He finished.
“I’m sorry but half of the women that come here fit that description.” The woman replied.
“It is ok I will try to find her.” he said walking away.
“Good luck…”
“How did you get in here? This is a women’s only gym!”
“I have my ways!” he said with a wink
He walked away looking at all the women on all the different pieces of equipment, eventually he came across a swimming pool, there was four women swimming back and forth, he walked up to one pedestal where a woman was swimming up to, she raised her head.
“Is the water ok?” he said with a smirk
“What are you doing in here?” she said
“I came for you!”
“How did you even get in?” she said getting out of the pool,
“I bribed the receptionist.” he said following her to the ladder
“Why did you come here?”
“Just like I said, I am here for you. I want to know if you are alright.”
“I am fine,” she said picking up a towel
“Just go home, we will talk later, like I said” she continued
“Please, I am not going home, I came all this way”
She stopped drying herself and listened to Danil with her arms closed.
“Talk!”
“Look, I just wanted to know if you still love me, and if we are still getting married because I love you and I really want to marry you.”
A smile grew on his fiancées face,
“I do still love you but… I need some time alone, I will be moving to my mothers house for a few weeks.” she said hanging her head,
Danils hands dropped, he stared at her with a frown and spun around
“I will see you when you get home, whenever that will be…”
He started to walk out of the gym and as he passed the woman from earlier she stopped him,
“So did you find her?” she said
“Yes, yes I did.” he said as he pushed by her.
He hung his head and walked faster out of the door. As he passed the receptionist she stood up and said
“Five minutes on the dot sir. did you find her?”
“…No, no I could not find her.” he said changing his mind.
“Oh I’m sorry sir, you’ll find her, don’t worry”
“Thank you” he said with a smile
He turned and started to frown again, he walked out of the gym and got into his car and drove home.
As he got home he climbed into bed and lay there with the TV on.
Three weeks later he got a phone call, he answered it.
“hello?” he asked
“Danil? It is your fiancée.”
“hi honey… wait, you said fiancée! Does that mean you will”
“yes. Yes I will marry you!” she said with tears in her voice.
“YES! BRILLIANT! THE WEDDING IS ON!” he shouted
“I was talking with Katie, she said it shouldn’t matter what your job is and she convinced me to stay with you. My mother could not be happier to get me out of the house.” she said almost crying.
He hung up the phone and drove to his fiancées mothers house. When he got there he lifted her up and put her in the car, he took her bags and put them in the boot, and drove off waving goodbye to the future mother-in-law.
